Enroute to Elder

“Youth is the gift of nature, but age is the work of art. It seems such a great day to say that you’re a real masterpiece”

Since early teenage years I have been intrigued and excited about growing up. Now 22 turning 23 that same excitement still exists within me. However, from my experience majority of the people in this world wish and try to hold on to their youth. This is visible in society in various forms and for each gender. For males, during our “prime” our actions and behaviours are committed solely for the benefit of ourselves. Unfortunately, some don’t get out of such mentality (“the sunken place”) and this results to things such as; irresponsibility, being an old “player” when you should be coaching or better yet out of the game. Whilst women try to hold on to the youth or the “youthful appearance” through things such as anti-aging creams. Why is that people fear and reject maturing and becoming an elder (wiser).

The limitations and struggles which we begin to encounter in the later stages of life are obvious and inevitable. There’s a saying which goes “it has not come to stay but it has come to pass”. This does not only apply to moments of adversity or temporary inconveniences but for ourselves too, our time is finite and we are on a collision course with death. To put it in better terms ‘new birth’. The thought of death can be terrifying, the uncertainty of what’s next and the possibility that we will return to our source without doing and being our purpose. One thing you can be certain of is that nothing is certain.

I believe it is time we overcome the fear of old age and death, such emotions and thoughts do not serve us. Our time will come, so will it be for others too. Why use our energy and resources to avoid something which can’t be eluded? Wouldn’t it be better to embrace and welcome the play of life? Let us choose to welcome all experiences of life that await us; we are born once and we die once but how we choose to live is limitless. There’s no past nor future, just the present and now. Each day is a new way of living so live your life.
